Eye allergies are caused by a reaction to allergens in the air while pink eye is most often caused by bacterial infections and viruses. Some allergy sufferers experience itchy, watery, burning or dry eyes from allergies. If you have persistent eye irritation, such as itchy and watery eyes, it could be caused by an allergic reaction to something in the air. Depending on what is causing your eye allergy symptoms, immunotherapy (allergy shots) can be very effective in providing long-term resistance to the triggering allergens. Over-the-counter antihistamine pills and eye drops are often used for short-term treatment of eye allergy symptoms. Apply saline eye drops to the eyes after being outdoors to wash away allergens from the ocular lining. Symptoms resulting from seasonal outdoor allergens tend to be worse than if your symptoms are due to indoor allergens such as dust mites or pet dander. Indoor allergens such as dust mites and pet dander can also cause eye allergies year-round. People with seasonal allergic rhinitis (hay fever) normally notice their symptoms worsen when they go outdoors on days with high pollen counts. Also called allergic conjunctivitis or ocular allergy, eye allergy occurs when something you are allergic to irritates the conjunctiva. For some people, especially those who are also coping with allergic rhinitis or asthma, allergy shots may eventually eliminate your eye symptoms so that medications are no longer needed. Depending on the severity of your eye symptoms, as well as the presence of other allergic symptoms such as allergic rhinitis, or asthma, many people choose to undergo allergy testing and allergy shots. Decongestant eye drops (with or without anti-histamines) should only be used for short periods of time, as overuse can lead to conjunctivitis medicamentosa (characterized as rebound eye redness/congestion and dependence on the eye drops). Many people with allergic eye disease will receive benefit from oral antihistamines, such as prescription or over-the-counter Claritin (loratadine,) Zyrtec (cetirizine,) Allegra (fexofenadine,) Clarinex (desloratidine,) and Xyzal (levocetirizine.) Older, first-generation antihistamines (such as Benadryl (diphenydramine) or hydroxyzine are also helpful, but are generally considered too sedating for routine use. Vernal keratoconjunctivitis is a severe form of eye allergy most common in late childhood in which the upper conjunctiva take on a "cobblestone" appearance due to enlarged lymphoid follicles. Itching of the eyes is the most common symptom of allergic conjunctivitis.
