Created in 2004 by Claire Nouvian, BLOOM Association is a non-profit organization whose mission it is to protect the oceans by informing the public about the current state of oceanic environments and educating people about the way forward.

Starting from the postulate that we only protect what we know and love, BLOOM seeks to increase the global level of knowledge about the oceans and to create ties of affection between people and the oceans by reconnecting adults and children everywhere with nature and the beauty it bestows.

And how does BLOOM do this? By sharing, talking, publishing educational literature, displaying real things and avoiding fake artifacts, by working hard to make complex science accessible to all, just like science should be: fascinating, compelling, and indispensable.

The four principles of the BLOOM philosophy are:

1 . Educate to increase awareness

BLOOM believes that in order to initiate a virtuous cycle of effectiveness, we must start with education: knowledge leads to awareness, and awareness to action.

2 . Make science available for everyone

The scientific content of all BLOOM’s projects and publications is irreproachably rigorous. To ensure this, BLOOM solicits experts for peer-reviewing and proof-reading. On top of that, specialist jargon is scrupulously avoided and the language used by BLOOM Association is always clear and accessible.

3 . Speak to everyone

Scientists forecast that we only have a few years to prevent the irreversible. This situation puts us in a unique position: man is not only responsible for his individual destiny, he is also collectively responsible for that of the planet. To translate: we adults are in no position to shirk responsibility for our actions, leaving the following generations to deal with the burden. Even though younger generations are the focus of much of BLOOM Association’s work, our communication efforts are equally destined for adults. We want to encourage everyone to act and without delay!

4 . Overcome boundaries

The divulgation of photographs of fabulous creatures arouses emotions of marvel and wonder in people in every country of the world. It is human nature to be fascinated by the discovery of this oceanic “intra-terrestrial” life, by the news of the existence of worlds previously unknown.
By the same token, nobody can say “it doesn’t concern me” with regard to the fundamental question of the oceans’ well-being. The objective is to raise awareness on a global level so that worldwide public opinion can tip the balance toward common sense and sustainability.
